Environmental Economics and Sustainability Unit (ESU)

The necessity of solving relatively specialized and targeted environmental problems in Greece, led to the establishment of ESU.

ESU focuses mainly in supporting – on a research and academic level – subjects relating to Sustainable Development, Production and Consumption.

It is usually believed that there can't be growth and/or development in a friendly and conventional environmental way combined with investments that cover social, environmental and economical aspects.

The research team of ESU provides solutions for all of the previously mentioned thematic areas by analyzing and studying the following subjects:

  • Analysis of Investments' Impacts on the Environment with the use of Environmental Economics Methodologies
  • Risk Assessment of Environmental Investments
  • Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
  • Business Planning
  • Vocational Training Projects
  • Assessment and Analysis on Environmental Investment Plans
  • Use of modern Financial Tools on Environmental Investments such as Cooperation of Public & Private Sector (PPC's), Venture Capitals etc.
  • Use of Cost-Benefit and Life-Cycle Analysis on Environmental Investment Assessments
  • Technical and Economical (Techno-economic) evaluation of Environmental Investments
  • Waste Management and Recycling

The Units' activities comprise also:

  • Consulting Services for the Public & Private Sector
  • Participation in EU Funded Research Projects & Studies
  • Organization and Management of Conferences and other Scientific meetings

The courses that are directly supported by ESU are:

  1. Technology Economics
  2. Special Issues/Chapters of Technology Economics

The Units Research Team comes mainly from the Sector of Industrial Management of the Mechanical Engineers School of NTUA and has extensive – academic and professional – experience on the Units' activities/thematic areas.

Coordinator and Head Researcher is Dr. K. Aravossis, Associate Professor NTUA.
